The “California Sheephead” (Semicossyphus pulcher) is a species of wrasse found in the eastern Pacific Ocean. They range from Monterey Bay down to the Gulf of California, Mexico. They can live for up to 20 years and reach up to 3 feet in length. All Cali Sheephead are born female and morph into their male form at different stages in their life cycle. The Cali Sheephead is considered vulnerable on the IUCN Redlist due to high fishing rates off the coast of California.
