Panaque cochliodon (Blue Eyed Panaque)

Species Information: Panaque cochliodon

Panaque cochliodon, also known as the Blue-Eyed Panaque 'Pleco', was described by Steindachner, in 1879. This rare species is an armored freshwater catfish endemic to Colombia where it is found in the Magdalena and Cauca River basins. 

Up until recently, most of these areas are under control of various paramilitary groups and narcotic trafficking organizations which makes commercial collection of Panaque cochliodon almost impossible. 

The conservation status for Panaque cochliodon is currently listed as 'Near Threatened' and was last assessed in 2014.
